Zeldzame Mensen is the result of a rare collaboration between Lukas Simonis and Pierre Bastien, two artists based in Rotterdam. The album title, which translates to “rare people,” is a play on the expression “rare disease”. An allusion to the unexpected re-union of the two musicians: they happened to be in the doctor’s waiting room at the same time and thus found out about this new thing they had in common.
However, all’s well with the sounds on this record, their second collaboration (following Mother Goose Rimes, in 2002), with Simonis’s electric sounds merging with Bastien’s organic textures to create free-form compositions. The tracks, often recorded spontaneously and as improvisations, allow for raw energy and palpable emotion. “Instant Songs,” spontaneously created.
