Maya Deren - Essential Deren: collected writings of Maya Deren
Maya Deren: not only a dancer, choreographer, poet, writer and photographer, but also director, cinematographer, performer, entrepreneur and pioneer in experimental filmmaking in the United States during the forties and fifties. Entirely independant, she screened her work in her own living room, set up a distribution network and presented lectures on her films across the United States, Cuba and Canada. This compilation brings together quintessential texts such as An Anagram of Ideas on Art, Form and Film (1946), Cinematography: the Creative Use of Reality (1960), and Adventures in Creative Filmmaking (1960). In these writings Deren guides the aspiring filmmaker and informs the interested viewer of her work. In short: about the material and physical problems of filmmaking and the creative labor of conceiving the film.
