Inspired by pop-up books, Akiko Ikeda displays objects that are cut out from snapshots and magazines, in intriguing, panoramic surroundings. Ranging from people, animals, vehicles, and buildings, the figures seem as if they have been transported into another world. The emphasis on scale differences is apparent as the objects are suddenly shifted, originally flat in two-dimensional photos but then standing as three-dimensional cutouts. Ikeda’s work lets the audience realize how their perceptions of scale and perspective are unconsciously controlled in a two-dimensional world.
