The Rosa Ensemble was founded in 1997 by a group of musicians from the Utrecht Conservatory, including current artistic director Daniel Cross. The name of the ensemble refers to the Brazilian novelist João Guimarães Rosa, whose novel Grande Sertão: Veredas (The Devil to Pay in the Backlands) formed the inspiration for the first Rosa-cd (Diepe Wildernis, 1997).
