The second volume of Folk Is Not a Four Letter Word gathers an admirably eclectic variety of rare folk-rock of the late ’60s and ’70s from around the world, and not just from English-speaking countries or English-singing artists. There are some U.S. and U.K. acts here, to be sure, and most of the tracks are performed in English, but there are also artists from Sweden, Holland, France, and Germany. More often than not, this travels the gentler, folkier, more mystical and haunting side of folk-rock, with a higher percentage of female vocals than many such compilations boast, and with Pentangle and Joni Mitchell in particular (and perhaps some Mary Hopkin and Melanie) often standing out as audible influences.
