MusikArbeiter - Drawdio D.I.Y. kit

The idea of a pencil that makes noises while you draw is not new, I had one in the collection before. However, I think the quality of this one is a bit better. It has a CR2032 battery which is lighter and the pencil is a fancy Faber Castell soft pencil with a thicker core.

What is a Drawdio?

Invented by Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum, it’s a gadget that allows you to make sounds just by drawing. The crux is the graphite in your pencil, a great conductor for electricity and, therefore, for creating a circuit that can trigger sound via a (tiny) speaker! It will need you to touch the pencil though, in order to complete the circuit. I have to say it is quite a high and thin sound – like a mouse squeaking – so don’t expect heavy noise. But it does work fine.

This version here is a DIY kit assembled by MusikArbeiter, a synth builder from Rotterdam. Easy and clear instructions in English are included. All you need is a suitable soldering iron and a pencil sharpener!
