Maya Verlaak - Blueprint Series # 3: A Deviation for Approximation

Number 3 in the Blueprint series that is published by iii (Instruments Inventors Initiative) in The Hague, NL. This time by Maya Verlaak, who invites you to recreate her artwork A Deviation for Approximation with detailed instructions and links to downloadable material. A Deviation for Approximation uses the map of a simple cycled route as a musical structure. The initial route can be followed in different locations, the city planning of these new locations creating different variations of the initial map. The compositional process means that one cycled route can become a musical variation of another route. Each city is different, so every time the route is performed, the initial map develops into variations.

Verlaak: “I see this as a musical process that can be visualized and performed. During a live performance, the audience can choose to watch documentation of the route, walk the route, or walk the route virtually with the aid of a live interactive computer application. I wrote this work originally for the German Ensemble Post-Music in 2022.”
