Han Bennink - Nerve Beats
Welcome reissue of a live 1973 Radio Bremen recording, where drummer (the terms sounds almost too boring for him!) Bennink performs solo. But he’s got a complete toy kit, and they are toys in the most playful sense. During, between, and after his drum improvisations he employs whistles, hoots, hollers, clarinet, trombone, and whatever it takes to allow him the freedom to twist the music inside out. His percussion is sometimes busy, pulsing, and polyrhythmic, sometimes sparse, colorful and open. Bennink occasionally relies upon an early drum machine to allow him the ability to perform sonic overlays. We often hear his characteristic voice: he releases primal screams here and there, to which the audience cheerfully react.
