Malcolm McLaren (Ed.) - Musical Paintings
This pocket book, a guide book to the eponymous exhibtion in Berlin (’08-’09) shows material brought together by Malcolm Mclaren and other contributors such as Delia Brown, Wolfgang Flad, Rodney Graham, Gregor Hildebrandt, Damien Hirst, Alicja Kwade, Jim Lambie, Jack Pierson, Rob Pruitt, Michael Queenland, Anselm Reyle, Michael Sailstorfer, and Andreas Schulze. At the core of this publication is McLaren’s work which was part of a group show in NY, entitled Shallow. He conceived a series of 21 sequences (Shallow 1-21) composed of both music and images, more or less slapped together, but rooted in the concept of shallow. The visual work, dubbed “the musical end of paintings”, is based on stills, taken from amateur sex movies, undergoes a transformation when juxtaposed with the musical cut-ups which, in the words of the artist beautified “a certain ugliness, and gave the word shallow a curious lift”.
