Really impressed by this debut album by Rotterdam-based artist Maj. She creates an amalgam of soul, musique concrète, sound design experiments and classical, employing objects as percussion, field recordings, piano, guitar, synths, violin and effects in compositions that are rich in color and contrast. Her music is abstract, paradoxical, full of emotion. At times, her voice submerges into a tumultuous sea of reverb and distortion, only to emerge in soft, bittersweet melodies. She sounds dark and eerie. She sounds romantic and whimsical. Engaging the mind, heart, and gut.

“So sensitive yet so immune. Light beams shine through millions of holes. The sun makes the black thick wall seem light grey. The light pulls apart to colors. Love feels painful yet beautiful. You are around even though you’re not. A brain doesn’t like to think it’s alone. Arranged sound into personal stories, all self-recorded. Because sound creates deep emotion.”
