‘Kölner Kranz’ by Thomas Lehn and Marcus Schmickler sounds raw, rustic, with wide-open noisegates and without limiters, the two dig through their filter banks and sometimes overdrive the parameters into the atonal. This makes the overall picture sound coherent, homogeneous and not so cerebral. The sounds are in motion and are given a greater opportunity to unfold. The dynamics, live action and energy of the two musicians are more immediate and almost tangible.
