Inspired by the current cultural climate and the new focus on entrepreneurship, the author, Gepke Bouma writes a story on the why and wherefore of government support of the arts, based on the case-study of Rotterdam. In this research she makes a chronological summary of all the initiatives and measures of the municipality and the Rotterdamse Kunststichting, which shed some light on the ideas and rationale behind the promotion and funding of the arts. For this publication she has spoken to 13 key figures who made their mark on the cultural policy for years to come, including former officials, aldermen and executives of the Rotterdamse Kunststichting. Containing a wealth of information and illustrations (archival material and photographs from bygone times), this book is also conceived to commemorate the formidable tenure of 65 years of the Rotterdamse Kunststichting.
