Isabel Schultz & Matthias Frehner, Claudine Metzger - Anna Blume und Ich

Zeichnungen von Kurt Schwitters. Anna Blume and I – After the textbook, there is the picture book. The work of Kurt Schwitters has been presented and interpreted in various contexts, but never before have his drawings been appreciated as a key to understanding his oeuvre. In 2011/2012 a major exhibition brought together a collection of 100 of his drawings, with a view to understanding important artistic junctures, such as the artist’s path to abstraction in 1918, the subsequent Dadaist experiments, his probing into constructivist territory,  besides showing the more mundane travel sketches and portrait studies, made while in exile in Norway and England (from 1937). The title of the exhibition was not only chosen for the Anna Blume of Schwitters’ famous love poem, but also refers to a watercolour made in 1919 (printed on the cover). NB: this exhibition catalogue, published by Hatje Cantz, offers a short introduction to the works in German (112 pages, 90 colour plates).
