Ada Rave and Marta Warelis, two luminaries of Amsterdam’s improvised music scene, unite on Peel/Mondo to craft a compelling dialogue between saxophone and piano. Rave, an Argentinian saxophonist renowned for her bold tenor sound and innovative techniques, joins forces with Warelis, a Polish pianist celebrated for her sonic versatility and explorations of the piano’s timbral possibilities. To my ears these two players have a great chemistry going on between them. Each piece on this album takes you to a new world, now exuberant, then again sweetly melancholic. Warelis prepares her piano strings here and there to bring in new funny incidents. The two explore so many timbres but they’re not afraid of silence when it has a meaning.
