Marijke Goeting & Maaike van Neck (eds.) - Algorithmic Imaginations – Critical Reflections on AI in Art and Design Practice
Algorithmic Imaginations offers an in-depth exploration of AI through the lens of art and design practice. This book sets out to investigate the reality of AI – how machine intelligence relates to the world, to our human capacities, to creativity and imagination, but also to social inequality, bodies, other beings and the environment. Algorithmic Imaginations operates under the assumption that artists and designers are not so much under threat from AI as they are in a unique position to critically engage with and shape our understanding of machine learning’s possibilities and limitations.
The structure of the book is playful and accessible, nice design by Maaike van Neck with lots of bright fluor colours. Written contributions, recorded conversations and visual explorations alternate, inviting students, practitioners and researchers of art and design to explore the role of AI within their practice: to map different attitudes and approaches to it, to engage in dialogue with young and experienced practitioners from the field, to develop relevant questions and critical reflections, and, ultimately, to (re)imagine how machine intelligence might shape our shared future.
With contributions by Siri Beerends, Vera van der Burg, Sofia Crespo, Marco Donnarumma, Marijke Goeting, Lauren Lee McCarthy, Maaike van Neck, Soyun Park, Anna Ridler, Pilar Rosado, Nikola Scheibe, Casper Schipper, Philipp Schmitt, Lukas Völp and Sabine Winters.
