Tzu Ni / Various Artists - Fragile Nuances
Tzu Ni impressed me recently with her amazing electronic music performance. A Taiwanese artist currently based in the Netherlands, she explores the entangled relationship between sound, gender, and space, often through multichannel sonic installations, field recordings, and text‑based narratives that emerge from subconscious memory. And this really curious publication caught my eye and ear! It is a compilation album on a flash drive, 16 GB USB, smartly hidden in what looks like a floppy disk. No floppy in here, sorry!! But the drive includes a sound sample pack file, the album and an interactive PDF with hyperlinks to each artist.
I also really like the package design. Great stuff.

“This compilation emerged from several failed attempts at porcelain forming in EKWC, with resonance tests and breakages across the process. It’s an experiment that cracked, shattered, and unexpectedly sang. I documented the failed porcelain forming process by recording the cracking and shattering sounds at various temperatures. Each stage revealed distinct decay patterns and frequencies. Although the ideal firing temperature is 1260°C, I explored how thickness affected resonance, capturing bow tests and the breakage of failed pieces at different stages. These recordings were condensed into short sonic fragments, tracing the full arc of porcelain’s sonic decay. Surprisingly, I realized that in my attempt to denoise a noise sample, I was paradoxically creating another layer of noise – revealing the poetic nature of decay as both erasure and transformation. This realization underscored the poetic and profound essence of sound decay, prompting a deeper exploration. Through these vanishing sounds, I reflected on their resonance with the present human condition. In this compilation, created alongside several dear friends, I sought to cultivate a more organic and meaningful way of connecting.”(Tzu Ni)
