We may consider Arthur Sauer a typical “Rotterdam composer”. He has lived and worked most of his life in the rougher areas of the city, near ports, in deserted buildings, directly drawing inspiration from the environments disregarded or even unknown by others.

Sauer, composer and performer of electronic and instrumental music, instrument builder and field recorder, for this album turned to the river he lived next to for a long time, in the Quarantaine Area, a complex once built to temporarily house people who came from tropical parts of the world, to make sure they did not bring any diseases into the homeland.

“This is another album about the place where I live. It is based on recordings made above and under water on the beach of the river the Nieuwe Maas. The recordings are processed by the aquasizer I programmed in Max MSP. Play this loud and in stereo! This is meant to be an immersive listening experience: low levels won’t do. Mono won’t work. Both tracks belong together and are like two big waves that will give an experience of being flooded.”  (Arthur Sauer)
