Various Artists - COBRA: Nach uns die Freiheit!
The “Nordic artists cartel”, better known as COBRA (short for Copenhagen / Brussels / Amsterdam), started (1948 to 1951) as a protest against francocentrism, more precise against the self-proclaimed and undisputed cultural capital of Europe, i.e. Paris. These “Young Savages” produced work which, by the weight of the color and the primitive nature of the shapes provoked a society, that was confronted with the rubble of World War II, and at the same time forging a new cultural and civilizational identity. Like DADA and the futurists, the COBRA movement took the bourgeois conception of art and vacuous society head on. These passionate seekers attempted to meld utopia with archaism in order to bring about the liberation of both the individual as well as society.
