In general, where art is concerned, women are either object, model or muse, but seldomly creators of the image. It is not a female view of the world, but a view of the female that is paramount. From the passive to the active, the artist Käthe Kollwitz succeeds in turning the tables, for herself and those she portrays. As early as 1919, she is the first woman appointed as professor to the Prussian Academy of Arts. Not one to hide her political commitment and anti-fascist sentiments, she remains to this day one the most beloved and famous German artists, excelling in printmaking and sculpture. Her biographer, Ursula Trüper sketches the life of Käthe Kollwitz in the social context of the beginning of modernity. Based on autobiographical documents she evokes the spirit of this fiercely independent person, who died 1945 in Moritzburg. Texts in German only.
