Joseph Cornell - Joseph Cornell’s Dreams
Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) was an artist and film maker known specifically for his boxes, toy-like constructions whose playfulness and humor are anchored in a profound melancholy and loneliness. Catherine Corman combed through Cornell’s voluminous diaries, now in the care of the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art. What she found are flashes of images and short, enigmatic narratives of illumination — the verbal equivalent of the Cornell boxes. The diary contains all the dreams of Joseph Cornell between March 3, 1944 and October 26, 1972.
