Jo Johnson - Let Go Your Fear
These beautiful meditative electronic music pieces feel like a tribute to composers like Laurie Spiegel, Suzanne Ciani and Pauline Oliveros. It is the type of music you listen to while liquid light shows are being shown: both of them are timeless, aren’t they? The vinyl itself brings the same associations, see picture below.
Jo Johnson’s previous explorations in sound have ranged from free-form punk with Huggy Bear in the 90s, to underground techno in the 00s, and, for the last decade, deeply expressive electronic minimalism .
“Let Go Your Fear is my second full-length album and probably my most raw and personal release so far. The three tracks on the album are extracts from a long, free improvisation on an early summer’s day and shared with you unedited and unadorned. I found the constraints of using a limited sound palette and tools helpful during the session and the level of focus needed for an extended improvisation induced a trance-like state. At the end we’re back where we started but nothing is the same.
To name the album and track titles, I experimented with automatic writing. Like musical improvisation, automatic writing happens in real time and things move too fast for the ego, rules, conventions and logic to limit the imagination.”
