Various Artists - Ecstatic & Wingless – Bird Imitation on Four Continents, ca. 1910-44
What a great idea to start digging for these recordings! Ian Nagoski, who runs Canary Records, is certainly the right person for it, being specialized in compiling curiosa of musical history. Be it on-line, on vinyl, CD or tape, it’s always good and never superfluous. We hear various vocalists, some anonymous, with educational demonstrations of birds, or artists, like hear Margaret McKee, a professional art-whistler, who performed dressed in feathers. Famous specialists to be heard here are Charles Kellogg and Charles Crawford Gorst. We hear a water-organ/flute duet from a record specially released for canary breeders to teach their birds certain songs. All this from the first half of the 20th century. A booklet with info about all the tracks plus an essay called ‘A Post-Natural Chronology of Bird Imitation, Recording, and Reproduction (in progress).’
