Erkki Kurenniemi - Dry ’73-9-8

Whatever DRY stands for (It could be DIMI READS YOU, I phantasize), it is related to the electronic musical instrument built by the Finnish electronic music pionneer Kurenniemi in 1973, Dimi-T (T=thinking, a.k.a. Electroencephalophone). It produces music from its player’s thoughts with electrodes fastened to the scalp of the player. The electrical brain activity is measured and used as a control signal of the instrument. The double A-side album is basically a diary note home recording by Kurenniemi himself testing the instrument’s prototype drunk and sleepy very late at night.

Double A-side recording, meaning: same piece on each side…

“Clearly the outward peacefulness of a sleeping man belies the torrent activity within, as almost immediately the oscillator heads off into wrenching shrieks of noise akin to a wildly malfunctioning police siren.” – Richard Pinnell, The Wire, Dec 2011
